Then move it all the way up until your fingers are pointing to the ceiling, and then all the way down. Then stick your arm straight out to the side and move it all the way up and down. Now try run DEAR DOCTOR Is there any way to unfreeze a frozen shoulder? DEAR READER: The term "frozen shoulder" describes a condition in which pain and stiffness cause a loss of the normal range of motion.

I saw DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend "Alex's" mom is the most controlling person I have ever encountered. We only get to see each other on weekends because he lives an hour away from me. When we do see each other, it's for one-third of the day. Alex has to spend the other two-thirds with her. I'm 22 and he is 21.

He is also not allowed to stay with me. Alex has to lie to her about where he's staying in order to be able to spend time ning the tip of your thumb up the middle of your back. If in any of these maneuvers you heard or felt a little "click" or "pop," a part of your shoulder had started to stiffen and you just loosened it up again. If you found that you couldn't do some of these maneuvers at all because of pain or stiffness, you might already have a frozen shoulder. An anti-inflammatory medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) can help relieve pain and inflammation.

a patient with a frozen shoulder a few months ago who could not scratch his back when it itched. He had to ask his family for help to take a book off an overhead shelf. Fortunately, a frozen shoulder can usually be unfrozen if you have the time, patience and willingness to experience a little pain. Normally, the shoulder has a wide and varied range of motion. Like the hip, the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint.

The rounded head of the bone of the upper arm (the humerus) sits in a scooped-out indentation of another bone, the Advice Dr. Komaroff with me. His mom has added a feature to his cellphone in order to see where he is 247, and would cancel his service if he refused it I love my boyfriend unconditionally, but his mom is driving us both crazy and turning our relationship into a trio. We have tried getting her to back off, but it just makes her worse. I am at a loss as to what to do.

What do you think we should do? EXTREMELY Advice Dear Abby A corticosteroid injection may help decrease inflammation. But the cornerstone of treatment is physical therapy. At first you'll concentrate on exercises that stretch the joint capsule. Then you'll move on to strengthening exercises. (I've put some examples of stretching and strengthening exercises on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Full recovery can take several months or even longer.

If you don't improve steadily, go back to your doctor or consult a shoulder expert. In rare cases, a frozen shoulder that doesn't respond to the treatments I've discussed may require surgery. Fortunately, that's not often necessary. Dr. Komaroff is aphysician andprofessor at Harvard Medical School.

The meeting of the humerus and scapula is called the glenohumeral joint. A frozen shoulder usually begins when injury or overuse causes pain that, in turn, limits the shoulder's range of motion. Common conditions that cause pain in the shoulder are bursitis or a tear in the rotator cuff (a group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder).

If you don't move your shoulder much at all for many weeks, the tissue surrounding the shoulder joint thickens and shrinks. It loses its ability to stretch. When you try to move it even a little, it hurts. So to avoid the pain, you move the shoulder even less. As a result, the joint capsule stiffens even further.

It's a vicious cycle. A frozen shoulder can take months to develop. Try this experiment: Stick your hand out straight in Sense Sensitivity DEARHARRIETTE: My friend's niece just got arrested for shoplifting. He is so upset about it, and I don't know how to help him. WORRIED IN MISSISSIPPI DEAR EXTREMELY WORRIED: Frankly, you should be worried.

Your boyfriend is an adult who seems to be firmly under his mother's thumb. He is completely dependent. At 21, Alex's activities should not be monitored, nor should he be spending two-thirds of his day with his mother. If nothing else, he should be looking for a job so he can sever the umbilical cord before it strangles him. You can't fix this.

HE has to do it. DEAR ABBY: My former roommate and I took a short trip to Florida. We agreed we would split the hotel costs. I'd reserve the room; she would reimburse me after the trip. She paid me a month later, and I deposited her check as soon as I could get to my bank, which was three weeks later.

When the check went through, she attacked me because she said it drained her account! I apologized, but told her I was upset that she was making it seem like it was my fault. I think that if someone is low on funds, the person should be more diligent in balancing his or her checkbook. Had I known she had money problems, I would have waited to deposit her check. It has been months, and my once best friend still won't speak to me. Was I wrong? AT FAULT? IN KENTUCKY DEAR AT No, you were not.

It was your friend's responsibility to make sure there were enough funds in her account to cover the check she gave you. She may be embarrassed, which is why she doesn't want to talk to you. People who are angry at themselves sometimes blame others. It's a sign of immaturity. DEAR ABBY: I have been dating "Kristen" for seven months.

She is great as far as personality, physical chemistry, similar likes and dislikes, and patience go. She is ALMOST everything I have ever wanted in a girl. However, I have never called her "beautiful," although she has made a couple of "fishing" comments to try to get me to say it. In my eyes, that would be a lie. Kristen is attractive, but not beautiful.

I have always thought that anyone I'm planning on spending the rest of my life with would be "beautiful" to ME, and I'd let her know accordingly. I can't discuss this with family or friends because I'm afraid they will think I'm shallow. Your thoughts? NOT SHALLOW IN PHOENIX DEAR NOT SHALLOW: Candidly, I think that in spite of all of her wonderful qualities, Kristen is not "the one" for you. And you are not "the one" for her because what she needs is validation you can't give her. Women need to feel beautiful in the eyes of the men they love, and because you plan to spend your life with someone who is beautiful "to you," you should both move on.

She has been misbehaving for a long time. She is 15 years old and is always doing crazy things, like staying out all night, smoking drugs and not going to school. She was always kind of bad, but after her grandmother died, she got a lot worse. What can I do to help him? He keeps asking me for advice. Worried, New Orleans, La.

DEAR WORRIED: The best thing this Advice llniTicttc Cole David Hagerty Insurance Agency, Inc. 517 E. She should visit a counselor with whom she can talk about her life, the loss of her grandmother and her choices. She needs to have a safe space to be able to talk about what's happening in her life and learn that it's possible for her to decide her fate.

Some parents in these situations also choose to send their children to schools for so-called delinquent teens, where they are immersed in learning discipline.
