Tesla's Model Y has been dealt a harsh blow by Germany's TÜV Report 2026, which has named it the least reliable car in its age category. This is a significant finding, especially considering the Model Y's global popularity. However, the story is more complex than it seems at first glance.
The TÜV Association, responsible for mandatory vehicle safety inspections in Germany, has released a report analyzing 9.5 million inspections. The Model Y's performance was abysmal, with a failure rate of 17.3% due to "significant" or "dangerous" defects. This is a stark contrast to the average failure rate of 6.5% for cars in the same age group.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Model 3, another Tesla vehicle, also fared poorly, with a 13.1% failure rate. So, what's causing these issues?
The report highlights two main areas of concern: suspension components and brakes. Tesla owners have long complained about suspension problems, and it seems these issues persist even in relatively new cars. The notorious control arm bushings, for example, have been a persistent issue.
The brake situation is a bit more nuanced. EVs, including Teslas, rely heavily on regenerative braking, which means the physical friction brakes are rarely used. In Germany's wet climate, this can lead to rust and corrosion on the brake discs, causing them to fail safety inspections. This is a known issue for all EVs, but it appears to affect Tesla more significantly.
Lighting defects also contributed to the high failure rate.
And this is the part most people miss: other EVs performed exceptionally well in the same report. The Mini Cooper SE and Audi Q4 e-tron had defect rates of just 3.5% and 4.0%, respectively, proving that this isn't an inherent issue with electric vehicles but rather a specific problem with Tesla's design or manufacturing process.
So, what does this mean for Tesla owners and enthusiasts? Well, it's a reminder that while Tesla's innovative technology and design have revolutionized the automotive industry, there are still areas where improvement is needed.
