SRSS Students Bring Robin Hood to Life: A Sherwood Forest Adventure (2025)

Get ready to be whisked away to Sherwood Forest—right in the heart of the Southeast! But here’s where it gets exciting: the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) is bringing the timeless legend of Robin Hood to life in a way you’ve never seen before. This isn’t your average school play—it’s a bold, action-packed production that promises to steal your heart. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about arrows and heists; it’s a story of courage, justice, and the underdog’s fight for what’s right.

Directed and produced by Shari Werner, this adaptation by Tim Kelly is a masterclass in blending thrill with emotion. ‘It’s a play with a lot of action, but it’s the heart that truly shines,’ Werner explains. ‘It teaches us that even in a world of injustice, good must—and will—prevail.’ But here’s the controversial twist: while the story stays true to Robin Hood’s classic ‘steal from the rich, give to the poor’ ethos, this version introduces two powerhouse female characters whose moral compasses couldn’t be more different. Is it a refreshing update or a departure from tradition? We’ll let you decide.

Meet Maid Marian, portrayed by Jutta Wittock, who describes her character as a perfect blend of bravery, boldness, and softness. ‘She’s gentle, especially in her moments with Robin Hood,’ Wittock shares. On the flip side, there’s Lady Merle, played by Chrysshell Quives, whose charisma and cunning make her a force to be reckoned with. ‘She’s manipulative,’ Quives admits, ‘but in a way that keeps you guessing.’ Together, these contrasting characters add a fresh layer to the familiar tale, leaving audiences wondering: who’s truly the hero here?

The journey to the stage hasn’t been without its antics. Auditions kicked off last June, and rehearsals have been in full swing since September. Werner praises the cast’s creativity, saying, ‘It’s been incredible to see how each actor brings something unique to their role.’ Wittock adds, ‘We’re growing stronger with every rehearsal, and it shows in how our characters come to life.’ And this is the part that’ll make you smile: their first dress rehearsal was performed for an audience of childhood stuffed animals. ‘They were the most respectful crowd ever,’ Wittock jokes.

Mark your calendars: Robin Hood takes the stage at the SRSS Theatre from December 3rd to 5th, starting at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.). Tickets are just $15 and can be purchased at the SRSS Library between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Assigned and accessibility seating are available. In the words of the cast, ‘Come see us! I command it in the name of Prince John.’

But here’s the question we’re leaving you with: Does this modern twist on Robin Hood honor the original spirit of the tale, or does it lose something in translation? Let us know in the comments—we’re all ears!
