As we soar into the exciting year of 2024 🚀, I extend warm wishes to everyone for a joyous New Year filled with opportunities and achievements✨. In this post, I would like to share another project I implemented this semester as part of our curriculum, where I took on the challenge of decrypting SHA-1 hashed passwords stored in a '.txt' file. Starting with the initial verification, the project expanded to strategically crack a significant portion of the passwords stored in the file. MethodologyI used Python along with Hashcat, a popular open-source password recovery tool that is used for advanced password cracking in this project. Its primary purpose is to discover or "crack" passwords by attempting various combinations of characters until it finds the correct one. Hashcat supports a wide range of hash algorithms and attack modes, making it versatile for different security scenarios. Drawing from the (bad!) practices of users, I explored the simplicity of bare digits, reliance on common English words, and the combination of words and digits. Leveraging a dictionary file, I coded a smart system that navigated the encrypted terrain with finesse.ResultsI achieved success in cracking 100% of the passwords of following types-🏆Single-word passwords cracked using Hashcat💻Double-word passwords cracked through a Combinator Attack👩Single-word and number combinations cracked using Python and Hashcat🔒All-number passwords cracked through a Dictionary Attack📚Triple-word passwords cracked through Python and Hashcat Combinator AttackKey TakeawaysThe project highlighted the effectiveness of combining programming languages and specialized tools, showcasing the power of collaboration between Python and Hashcat in achieving a common goal. It emphasized the importance of strategic thinking in cybersecurity, especially when dealing with password security. Understanding common user practices and employing targeted approaches significantly contributed to successful outcomes. The dynamic nature of cybersecurity challenges reinforced the need for continuous adaptation. Staying informed about evolving security practices, leveraging diverse tools, and embracing a proactive mindset were key takeaways from the project. 🚀 Having successfully completed my 1st semester in the Master's in Cybersecurity program here at UNCC, I am eager to reflect on some key takeaways from the course. Specifically, I'll be sharing insights about the DDoS attack implementation project as part of our Network Security Course. In the realm of network security, our project delved into Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, specifically exploring the implementation of TCP SYN flood attacks and HTTP flood attacks. The project was structured into three tasks: Socket Programming (Task-1)·🌐 Explored client-server interactions.·🚀 Achieved seamless message transmission between client and server.·🎯 Proficient socket creation for effective communication.TCP SYN Flood Attack (Task-2)·🔍 Utilized Scapy for SYN packet creation.·🎭 Introduced randomness in IP addresses and port numbers.·🌊 Ensured scalability with a continuous flood of SYN packets.·🕵Monitored and analyzed packets using Wireshark.·🚀 Emphasized timer accuracy for effective attack execution.HTTP Flood Attack (Task-3)·🔄 Implemented multi-threading for simulating multiple clients.·🖋Crafted HTTP packets with random URLs.·🌊 Randomized IP addresses and port numbers for each packet.·🌐 Scalable generation of HTTP packets for the bonus challenge.·🕵Monitored and tracked packets using Wireshark.·🎯 Ensured timer accuracy for the success of the HTTP flood attack.🛠Tools and Technologies:·🐍 Python for implementation.·🛠Scapy for packet crafting.·🖥Ubuntu Operating System for experiments.·📊 Wireshark for packet monitoring and analysis.Project Repository:You can explore the project's code, README file, and report on the GitHub repository: https://lnkd.in/ehhEtMQdLooking back on my first semester in the Master's in Cybersecurity program at UNCC, I feel grateful for the knowledge and practical insights I've acquired. This project has been an enriching experience, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on implementation. Exploring the intricacies of DDoS attacks and mastering tools like Scapy has equipped me with valuable skills in the dynamic field of cybersecurity. In the next post, I will be sharing about another project from the same course where I developed a password cracking mechanism for SHA-1 hashed passwords stored in a file.

Finally, got my hands on this amazing book by Richard Stiennon. Although a 1 year older version but it’s worth the read. It gives introduction about the industry, its brief history, latest trends, stories of entrepreneurs and of course directory of companies with proper categorization. Highly recommended for those trying to get their foot in the industry. Always on my table for reference 😌 🤓.
