PS3 - [3K3Y ISO TOOLS] Understanding PS3 disk encryption (2024)

Im waiting for @Berion reaction about the planned features for managunz v1.39 PS3 - [3K3Y ISO TOOLS] Understanding PS3 disk encryption (1) https://github.com/Zarh/ManaGunZ/blob/master/Changelog.txt

Making an encrypted disc backup... and mounting it... are 2 different things though
To mount it is needed to deal with all that security layers on runtime and maybe is not posible to achieve a decent speed because the decryption is going to hit performance

Btw, what im going to say is a bit offtopic, but very related with what is explained in that 3K3Y PDF about the disc "regions". And is still a feature missing in all PS3 backup managers, take a read at my posts here, i was talking about it before:
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/u...slims-noncfw-models.23955/page-68#post-182725

There are some PS3 games that are "multiboot", for a standard PS3 game the XMB only displays 1 "bootable" ICON0.PNG (to run the main game, obviously), but the fact is XMB allows to display multiple "bootable" ICON0.PNG icons (to run multiple games, everyone of them with his own EBOOT.BIN)

This feature was implemented latelly in PS3 firmwares... or maybe is something that exists since many firmware versions ago, but the point is just only a few BluRay games uses it, and that games was released latelly in PS3 lifespan... so is something that most developers of backup managers was ignoring... and as a consequence the support for this kind of "multiboot" BluRay games is very limited or inexistent in actual backup managers

At some point estwald added support for it in the legacy iris... but he only added support for "mounting" them (not backuping them)
The result is... if you try to make a backup of this kind of multiboot games... the files inside directories PS3_GM01, PS3_GM02, PS3_GM03, etc... are going to be ignored (so your backup is a single bootable game, not multiboot)
But if you create the correct file structure in PC and you try to mount it in iris it looks fine (is really a multiboot game, like the original BluRay disc)

Some of you knows what pieces are missing to achieve this ?, in my oppinion it looks this is going to be directly related with this sentences of the PDF

As far i understand, for an standard game there is a region containing the game files. And it should be the contents of USRDIR directory because this is where are really stored the game files. I mean... the files "outside" the USRDIR folder are not really game files (are "sony" files intended to be used by "extended" functions)

The point is... the second, third, and others EBOOT.BIN's (for every game) needs to be located in odd regions (encrypted), and there should be 1 region for every game, right ?
Not sure what do you think about this, is just a theory (and maybe that PDF have some innacuracy, because maybe they was ignoring this feature, as mentioned before, this "multiboot" special discs was not so popular so many people doesnt knows that exists)
But it smells fishy to me, if i had to bet, i would say that regions are the key to add full "multiboot" support to the backup managers

Spawn, LuanTeles and Algol like this.
