Announced on Tuesday, this groundbreaking project marks one of the first comprehensive national artificial intelligence education pilots globally. But what does this mean for teachers and students? This initiative will provide hundreds of Icelandic teachers with access to Claude, an AI designed to revolutionize their daily tasks. The goal? Anthropic aims to test how AI can significantly improve Icelandic schools, support educators in their instruction and preparation, and ultimately, enhance student learning outcomes. "We're proud to partner with Iceland's Ministry of Education and Children to help teachers save time and create better learning experiences for their students," stated Thiyagu Ramasamy, Anthropic's Head of Public Sector. Iceland's Education and Children Minister, Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson, highlights the government's commitment to exploring AI's potential in education while remaining mindful of potential risks. "Here, we take the leap and embark on an ambitious project aimed at examining the use of artificial intelligence in various areas of education, with the needs of teachers as our guiding principle and using technology from global leaders in the field," Kristinsson said.
The pilot program will also offer training and technical support for participating teachers. Moreover, the system supports Icelandic and several other languages, fostering more inclusive and empowering learning environments.

Anthropic isn't alone in this endeavor. OpenAI has partnered with the Greek government to bring its technology to secondary schools and start-ups. Estonia is also launching a national AI initiative for teachers and students, though the specific AI company remains undisclosed. Anthropic has been actively expanding its partnerships with public institutions across Europe. In February, the UK government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Anthropic to improve access to government information and services online.
