Now you are going to scoop about a tablespoon's worth of cookie dough and then roll the cookie dough into 1-2" size balls and place each cookie dough ball 2-3" a part on your baking sheets.

Gently press down on the cookie dough balls - we don't want them to be completely flat, but don't leave them as a ball! They should be about ½ inch thick.

Now place a few extra chocolate chips and sprinkles on top of each cookie dough so that they bake up nice and pretty!

Place your baking sheet in the oven and bake these cake mix cookies for about 8-10 minutes.

TOP TIP FOR MAKING THESE CAKE MIX COOKIES

Do not over bake these cake mix cookies!

They do not turn golden brown because remember, we didn't use any brown sugar! They are going to look like they're not "done" because they are a light color. This is the intended result we are looking for!

Let your cookies sit for at least 2-3 minutes before removing them from the baking sheet!

Have you tried making these like bars instead of individual cookies?

  4. kayla Bird

Can I make the dough ahead of time like 2 days before baking? If so, should I freeze it or put it in the fridge?

  5. Jenn

Yes! Just keep it in the fridge - I don't have personal experience with freezing it, but you can keep most dough in the fridge for a day or two before baking. Just let it thaw to room temperature before baking!

I made these and they turned out so delicious. The only thing I did different was use red and green mini M&Ms instead of the chocolate chips and holiday sprinkles. Thank you for a great and simple recipe. 🙂

  7. My Quirky Creation

Wow! They look just to good to be eaten!!

  8. Christa Crossman

I can’t see what the difference would be really. The dough is a base what you add to it is up to you 😉
    Do these freeze well?

  9. Jenn

I personally didn't try freezing them, but I've frozen cookies with a similar recipe and they were fine once they defrosted!

  10. Karen

Can white chocolate chips be used instead of chocolate?
    Thank you!

  11. Danielle Crossman

Can i use a different flavor cake like chocolate?

  12. Kristi Kelly

You can make Cake Mix Cookies with any box mix. I like Spice Cake mix with Heath Toffee Chips thrown in. Also I do Lemon Cake Mix with Lemon Icing (lemon juice and powdered sugar). You can be creative with Yellow Cake Mix or Chocolate Mixes. Just DO NOT overbake.

  13. SEAN

Hello, I know the American conversion can be confusing. Im a Canadian so I have experiance lol.
    C refers to a cup so ie 1/2C = 1/2 cup
350 is in F so its 175 Celsius
White cake mix is just a box of ready to make cake mix found in the baking isle of a grocery store. Hope this helps

These didn’t work out for me. But I think I might have followed the directions on the cake mix box instead of this recipe. The cake mix called for water to be added and so my batter was very runny. Why 1 TBS of flour? That’s so odd.
Anyways I thickened the mix with about a cup or two of flour but now the cookies taste like biscuits.

  15. Jenn

Oh no! I am sorry to hear that - yes, you can't follow the directions on the cake mix box, use these instructions instead! We just use the box mix as a base for our recipe.

Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Santa Cookies Recipe (24)
Made these cookies and they are amazing!! How long do they stay good after baking?

  17. Jenn

thank you! In my experience, up to a week (7 days). You can also freeze them and then defrost later!

  18. DEBBIE

What brand cake mix did you use?

  19. Jenn

I use whatever is on sale at my local grocery store - usually Betty Crocker! It's been a while since I did this recipe, so I can't remember - but it was probably Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines.

  20. Millie

    Good morning,
If I use a different box cake mix, do I use the whole eggs or keep to the egg whites only?

  21. Jenn

It should not make a difference which brand of cake mix you use - just use the egg whites. Let me know how it turns out!

  22. Linda Smith

These were way too rich for our taste. The kids seem to like them better than adults. I did buy one box of cake mix w/pudding in it and those turned out better than those without - more plump of a cookie. Overall, I think we will stick to sugar cookies next time around.

  23. Jenn

    Thank you for the feedback!

  24. Waqas

What type of oil do you recommend using?

  25. Waqas

and Cookies made from a cake mix are usually mealy! How about adapting a normal chocolate chip cookie recipe for this!?!

  26. Jenn

    You can certainly try it!

  27. Ashley

Egg whites? Can you use 2 regular eggs? Or does it have to be without the yolk?

  28. Jenn

It has to be egg whites only.

Wonderful Christmas cookies! I made these this past weekend with my 6 year old. We swapped out the Christmas sprinkles for Christmas m&ms. They were super simple to make and tasty! My little one is already asking when we can make them again. Thank you for sharing!

  30. Rare

More like a question...Umm this might be a stupid question but are you mixing the cake and the cookie dough together or just using cookie dough as like a crust form for the cake?

  31. Jamie

So do you mix the cake mix and then mix that in with the flour and other ingredients? Or mix the dry cake mix in with the other ingredients?

  32. Nina

Can gluten free cake mix be usef

  33. Brynn Clark

These cookies were soo good and very easy to make!

  35. Jenn

  36. Jenn

No, you mix all ingredients together at once! You are not following the directions on the box of cake mix, you are following my directions here.

  38. Gayle Shepherd

Do you have a chocolate cookie with cakemix? Thanks

  39. Suzanne

This is such a cute idea! What a fun Christmas cookie to make with kids!

  40. Vanessa

Thanks for sharing! How far ahead of time can I make them?

  41. Jenn

Just like most cookies, these will be good for a few days, then start to get hard. I'd say 3 days max for "fresh" cookies!

  42. Barbara montez

I made these yummy cookies my family loved them thank you . Can you make a Christmas sugar with this recipe instead of adding chocolate chips?

  43. Taylor

If I use eggs whites from a carton, how much should I use?

  44. Ray

Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Santa Cookies Recipe (27)
These cookies are fabulous!!!! They are very versatile. I used the exact recipe and then did another batch with reeses pieces. Great recipe!!!!

  45. Jenn

Check the carton, they will tell you the ratio! 🙂

  46. Jenn

You know what, I am going to this weekend! That's a great idea, thank you for the suggestion!

  47. Mignon

I use a lemon cake mix and cool whip and just one egg. Only half of a small carton of cool whip. Roll in powdered sugar and bake at 350 for only a few minutes. So good they are called Lemonwhippersnaps! Everyone loves them!

  48. EJ

Whoops! I used the whole egg. Hopefully they turn out! Baking as I speak! 🤷🏻‍♀️

  49. Jenn

    How did they turn out?

  50. Jenn

    That sounds delicious!

  51. Aula

Followed directions as shown. It was a batter, no where near dough consistency so I had to keep adding flour.... then stirring the chocolate chips just turned the dough gray 🤷🏼‍♀️Tasty but ugly!

  52. Jenn

Oh wow! I wonder what happened?

  53. cheyenne

hi im new and i like the cookies it makes me feel hungry and thank you!

  54. cheyenne

Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Santa Cookies Recipe (28)
When I made these they disappeared in about 3 days. LOL

  57. Rockwood

I didn’t care for how these turned out. They taste very cake like and not much like a cookie. Also, the dough was incredibly oily! It was difficult to get the balls to form. I followed your recipe to a T so I’m not sure why I had such bad luck. Unless you’re looking for a super sweet cookies recipe, I don’t recommend these. Try regular chocolate chip dough, hold the yolks, add sprinkles.

Delish! I used dairy free chocolate chips and these were perfect for my daughter with food allergies!
