Park closes at 7:30 p.m. or sunset, whichever comes first. Public consumption or display of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited. Gathering of firewood is prohibited. Campfires are permitted only in fire rings provided at each site.

About the Balmorhea State Park pool

More than 15 million gallons of water flow through the pool each day, gushing from the San Solomon Springs. The 1.3- acre pool is up to 25 feet deep, holds 3.5 million gallons of water and the water temperature stays at 72 to 76 degrees year-round.

Take noodles or floats, snorkel gear, and a picnic. The state park store has a few swim accessories but you may want to take your own to make sure you get to see the turtles and fish.

The pool has a large main circular area 25-feet deep with two long rectangular arms extending out. One arm is three to five-feet deep, the other is 20-feet deep. The circular pool is reserved for scuba divers while the two arms are open to swimmers and snorkelers.

The pool at Balmorhea State Park is the largest spring of the San Solomon Springs system—a series of six springs located in Balmorhea.

The native vegetation of the region is dominated by creosote bush, mesquite, and mimosa as well as saltbush and yucca. The park contains a few acres of Chihuahuan Desert scrub as well as old cottonwoods that line the channels radiating from the spring.

The reservoir was built in 1917 by the construction of a dam by the Reeves County Water Improvement District. The reservoir provides water for irrigation, and is a popular recreational spot for locals. Balmorhea Lake is also known as Lower Parks Reservoir.

Seriously, the state of Texas has no law against drinking in public at all. Local ordinances may prohibit drinking in certain areas, (whether it's a park or not), which can land you in hot, alcohol free, water.

Snorkeling is one of the best ways to experience Balmorhea, offering an up-close look at the pool's underwater world. Snorkelers can swim with turtles, pupfish and schools of minnows, and look for catfish patrolling the deep.

Company 1856 of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built the pool between 1934 and 1941 as part of the New Deal during the Great Depression as a way to open up jobs for people needing work. The CCC also built San Solomon Springs Courts, which rents rooms available for overnight stays.
