Those recipe-introduction lines up there make me sound like the most annoyingcar salesman. Or, recipe salesman, in this case.
My husband sells cars… I hope he’s not this annoying. 😉

HI, Friends! What’s goin’ on?Are you suiting up for the weekend? Just a few more hours and you’ll get to flop onto that couch and Facebook-all-the-people for the next 48 hours!

Oh, hey. Remember that one time when we didn’t have Facebook? Like, the times when your little cousin was YOUR LITTLE COUSIN and you didn’t have to know everything about her teenage life via the duck-face pictures onyour Facebook news feed??

Or, or, when your child’s teacher was just a teacher and you didn’t even know that she had a first name, but thanks to Facebook, she has a firstname ANDshe drinks beer on the weekends?! Remember those days before you knew all this stuff? WOW. That was thelife.
At least all my duck face pictures are on a polaroid… and in my possession, only.

And, and, how about that one time when you baked sliced apples in the microwave and ate all the apple chips??
I felt like the healthiest being on the planet.

So, I don’t have patience. I know that baking apple chips for hours on end, in the oven, and letting them dry just a little bit longer is the correct way to go about this apple-chip biznass, but I just can’t.I’m as anxious as a child on early Christmas morning. I want all the things, and I want them now.Stat.

Look at the yellow tint up there… What a beautiful action shot! 😛
BUT, that picture serves a purpose, and it’s described in two words; SINGLE LAYER. Remember those words…

Just minutes after coming home from the Apple Orchard last weekend, I was slaving over the mandoline, trying to save my fingers while slicing my Honeycrisps. Without adding a single crystal of sugar, nor a drop of cinnamon, I popped them in the microwave oven and within minutes, I had my fix. It was wonderful.

Healthy. Crispy. Fall-y.
Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Vegan, Vegetarian… I got it all covered.

You should totally make some while thinking about what to do with all them apples.
Then, you should totally come back in a day or two and see what else I did with them apples!

Happy Weekend!

ENJOY!

Prep Time 3 minutes mins

Cook Time 7 minutes mins

Total Time 10 minutes mins

Ingredients

  • Apples , washed and dried

Instructions

  • Cut off the ends of an apple, core out the middle (I don't), and thinly slice into 1/8-inch rounds. This is best done with a Mandoline Slicer, but you can also use a sharp knife.

  • Line a microwave safe plate with parchment paper.

  • Place a few apple slices on parchment paper in one single layer. (You will have to do this in batches.)

  • Microwave for 4.5 to 5 minutes, or until edges of apples start to curl up.

  • Flip each slice and continue to microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until edges are crisp.

  • Remove from microwave and let stand 10 minutes, or until crispy and dry.

  • Serve immediately.

Notes

All microwaves are different; start watching the apples at about the 4-minute mark until you can determine the proper time needed to bake the apples in your microwave. If the apples are small, about 2-inches in diameter, decrease the time by 1-minute. RECIPE SOURCE: DIETHOOD

    FAQs

Why aren't my apple chips crispy? ›

Expert Tips. Thin slices are best! If you slice the apples more than 1/8 inch thick, they will still be delicious, but they won't be as crisp.

Why are my dehydrated apples not crispy? ›

If you're trying to make crispy apple rings, keep in mind that the slices will get crispier as they cool off. Slicing the apples too thick or too thin will cause them either to burn or remain chewy and take longer to dehydrate.

Do you have to soak apples before dehydrating? ›

Treat apples before drying to prevent excessive browning. The treatments also help to preserve the flavor and vitamins of the fruit. The simplest pre-treatment is to soak freshly cut slices for 10 minutes in a solution of one part bottled lemon juice to one part water.

How long to dehydrate apples for chips? ›

Arrange apple slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays, ensuring there is space between pieces to allow airflow. Dehydrate at 135F/57C for 6-12 hours, until dry (see note 1).

What is the problem with apple chips? ›

Apple M-series chips are vulnerable to a side-channel attack called “GoFetch,” which exploits data memory-dependent prefetchers (DMPs) to extract secret encryption keys.

What makes chips more crispy? ›

The difference lies in their starch content and structure. Waxy potatoes are amazing for boiling as they keep their shape, but floury potatoes fry up crisper. Use a floury (also called mealy) potato such as Russet or Shepody for your chips and you'll have better success.

How do you dehydrate apples so they are crunchy? ›

    Instructions
    1. Preheat your oven to 225F (110C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
    2. Use a mandoline or knife to cut the apples as thinly and evenly as possible. Brush off any seeds or stems. ...
    3. Bake for 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours until apple slices feel dry and leathery.

How do you know when dehydrated apples are done? ›

You'll know your apples are done when they're dry to the touch, but double-check by folding a sample slice in half. If your oven-dried apples are done, they won't stick when you fold it; if not, it will, due to remaining sugar and moisture.

How thick should you slice apples for dehydrating? ›

It's important the apples are the right thickness before dehydrating. Slice the apples approximately 1/3-inch thick—they should be no thicker than 1/2-inch thick. Otherwise, they won't dry well.

What are the best apples for dehydrating apple chips? ›

The best apple for dehydrating is Gala or Fuji. Both are sweet apples that make your dried apples taste like you've added sugar when you haven't! Other good options are Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp and Fuji apples. If you prefer less sweetness in your dried apples, go with Granny Smith.

Do you put anything on fruit before dehydrating? ›

    Pretreating Fruits

Place cut fruits in a solution of 3¾ teaspoons of powdered ascorbic acid (or crush 20 500-milligram vitamin C tablets) or ½ teaspoon of powdered citric acid in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes before placing on trays to dry.

How do you store apples after dehydrating? ›

Store in airtight containers in a cool, dark, dry place. The shelf life of dried fruits increases when stored in the freezer or refrigerator.

Can you dehydrate apples and bananas at the same time? ›

    1 Zone / 16 Tray / 2.56m² Tray Area

Dip apple rings into juice and set on dehydrator tray without touching each other. Set banana slices on different dehydrator tray. Sprinkle sliced fruit with nutmeg and cinnamon. Dehydrate at 135°F (57°C) for 8 to 12 hours or until fruit slices don't have any moisture spots.

Can you dehydrate apples too much? ›

You cannot overdry foods you plan on putting into storage. The drier it is, the better it will store. You might over dry fruit leather or jerky a little more than your taste preference is, but you cannot overdry food meant for food storage.

Why is my apple crisp not crispy? ›

Why is Apple Crisp not crispy? Don't forget to evenly distribute the butter with the topping. That melted butter helps crisp everything up on top for the perfect texture and flavor!

Why is my apple soft and not crunchy? ›

Unripe or overripe apples may have a soft or mealy texture. When an apple is mature, its cells are fully developed and filled with moisture, contributing to its crisp texture. This ideal moisture level is best achieved with refrigeration to extend the apple's crunchy texture.

How do you get Crispier chips? ›

Turn the heat up under the oil and return one blanched chip to the oil as a guide again. Once it's floating and golden the temperature should be about 180°C, which is perfect for frying and will give you chips with those all-important crispy outsides and fluffy middles.
