Why Get a Shipping Container House?
There are a lot of great reasons to think about getting a shipping container tiny house!
Shipping container homes are prefab structures. That means that you can install one quickly and easily. Doing so will probably be less expensive than building a traditional home.
You can add or remove modular units as you wish. You get to decide how large or small a home you want. You can grow your home in the future by adding more containers, or you can scale it down by removing some. You also get to choose the layout you want. You can have a one-story home, a two-story home, and so on.
Your home will have a cool industrial look and feel. If you love this aesthetic, you will enjoy every moment you spend in your shipping container home.
A metal home can stand the test of time. Wood tiny houses are subject to moisture and mold, but metal shipping containers don’t suffer from wood rot. They also cannot be targeted by termites or other pests. They are sturdy, fire-resistant, and require little maintenance.
A shipping container home can be an environmentally friendly choice. There is actually some contention in this area since the containers are often not used to the fullest extent they could be on an industrial level before being upcycled into homes—but rampant waste of relatively new containers is widespread among companies. For that reason, one may as well turn one into a house.
What Does It Cost to Build a Shipping Container Home?
There is a pretty wide price range for shipping container houses.
If you plan to buy a shipping container and convert it into a home yourself, you could pay anywhere from around $1,400-$6,000 for the container.
You will then need to tack on the additional costs involved with preparing that shipping container to serve as a home.
Adding in those costs, or considering what you would pay to purchase a completed small shipping container home from another company, at the lower end, it could be around $10,000. At the upper end, it might be around $40,000.
It is possible to get a large shipping container home as well. If that is an option you are interested in exploring, you can expect the costs to be as much as $100,000, or higher.
How Big Are Shipping Container Homes?
Shipping containers tend to come in two standard sets of dimensions. There are 20’ x 8’ shipping containers, and 40’ x 8’ shipping containers.
If you make a house out of one of the smaller shipping containers, you would have 160 ft.² of space.
If you go for one of the 40’ shipping containers, you would have twice as much space, 320 ft.².
It is also useful to note that most shipping containers are 8.5’ tall.
Do Shipping Container Houses Have Any Drawbacks?
For the most part, a shipping container is an ideal living space once converted. But these containers do pose a couple of challenges.
The first issue is that even though shipping containers are metal structures, most of them are not designed with long-term residential use in mind. As a result, they require reinforcement.
You also will need to insulate your shipping container house.

This tiny house is located in Australia and demonstrates that you can finish a shipping container home with whatever materials you want to achieve an appearance that is consistent with your aesthetic preferences.
In fact, at first glance, you might not even realize that this is a shipping container home since it is finished with wood.
Like the exterior, the inside of the house is modern, yet homey. It features wide-open floors, large windows and doors, and lots of sunlight.

2. The Happy Twogether
The cleverly-named “Happy Twogether” is a home created out of two shipping containers combined.
The version of the build that is pictured here includes distinctive green siding. The house is available with a wide range of materials and colors, however.
Unlike a lot of shipping container homes, this one doesn’t have a really “modern” look to it. Warm wood throughout the interior gives it a cozy, old-fashioned charm. The arched doorway to the bedroom also brings more softness to the look and feel of the home.
In fact, if you did not see the exterior of the house and did not realize it was a shipping container home, you probably would never guess from most of the interior shots.
It just goes to show that whatever your style is, you can have a shipping container home built to match.

3. Litchfield, Australia Shipping Container House
Do you dream of a two-story tiny house? If so, shipping containers are particularly well suited to such a build, as demonstrated by this tiny accommodation in Litchfield, Australia.
The staggered layout of this tiny house features the two shipping containers at perpendicular angles to one another.
This configuration increases the amount of usable outdoor space which is available. The top shipping container acts as an awning for part of the large patio on the first floor. Stairs lead up to a large deck on the second floor.
Huge windows allow the occupant of the accommodation to fully appreciate the views surrounding the house.

4. Who Would Think This is a Shipping Container?
While I personally am a huge fan of the modern minimalist shipping container home look, a lot of people prefer a more traditional-looking home. Well, if that describes you, here is a house that will blow your mind, because it is almost impossible to guess at a glance that it is a shipping container.
You can tell from its dimensions that it is a shipping container home. But the pitched roof and the live edge siding do an amazing job disguising it as a traditional cabin.
This particular shipping container house is a home office. It looks like a really pleasant, cozy environment to spend a day working.

5. phu*ket Stacked Loft Containers
You can use stacked shipping containers to create an apartment complex of sorts, as demonstrated by this vacation getaway in phu*ket.
The look of the units is modern and industrial. Stairs lead up on the outside to the upstairs units.
Bricks contrast with metal to bring textural interest to the interior. Large windows spanning the front of each unit offer views of the lush surroundings.

6. Litchfield, Australia “Cabin One”
The two-story tiny shipping container accommodation that I shared before in Litchfield Australia is “Cabin Two” on a site that also includes this “Cabin One.”
As you can see, this tiny accommodation features a very different layout from the other. Whereas that one was a two-story structure, this one is a single-story structure. The two shipping containers are side-by-side, but are oriented at a slight angle toward one another. Between them in front is a wide porch that provides a lot of room to relax outdoors. Although, it looks like the front of the tiny house opens up wide to the outdoors, too, so you could still enjoy the fresh air and scenery from inside.

7. $15,000 DIY Shipping Container House
Petar Ceklic decided that he wanted to build a tiny house using a shipping container. He didn’t have a big budget, but that didn’t stop him. He managed to create a gorgeous minimalist tiny house for just $15,000. Petar said, “Shipping containers instantly appealed to me as I thought it’s a room that just needs to be fitted out.”
The house features panels that the family can open to let in fresh air and views through the glass doors spanning the front. They can be closed back over the front for privacy and protection from the elements.
The simple black color scheme makes for a refined look. As you can see, he managed to fit in bunk beds here for his kids. The sofa is convertible, and can expand into a queen-size bed. There is no loft, but there is a full kitchen. The home is also eco-friendly with a rainwater collection system and solar panels. There is even a composting toilet, so it can serve as a standalone residence.

8. Homes for German Refugees
In the US, when we think about tiny houses, we tend to think about small but luxurious homes that are targeted largely at those in a middle income bracket. But in a lot of countries, tiny houses are not simply designed for those who can choose to scale down—they are built to solve dire social ills that need addressing right away.
These tiny container homes are built to house refugees in Germany. Each one of them has room for up to 8 people.
Designer Tempohousing writes, “The quickest solution to build emergency homes for refugees, like this project in Germany, is to manufacture large modules that can contain 2 or 3 homes with all facilities included. After arrival on site and placing them with a crane on a simple 8 block foundation, they can be used the same day!”

9. Two-Story Shipping Container Home near Limon
A few years ago, I stumbled across this super cool two-story shipping container home for sale near Punta Uva, Limon.
As you can see, this home features a really neat configuration. Like the accommodation we shared earlier in Australia, it features two stories with the containers arranged in a staggered way. But in this case, we are looking at two long shipping containers, and thus a lot of sheltered space down below, and plenty of deck space on not one, but two levels. Fun, bright colors make this a stylish structure.
The interior is so open and airy! There are also some beautiful decorative touches that really make for a unique ambiance.

10. Cubica Architects Container Home
This tiny house is the work of a Costa Rica company called Cubica Architects.
The stunning modern house only measures 160 square feet. The rooftop features a deck for some extra outdoor living space, complete with railings and built-in wood seats.
The interior features a simple, homey decorative style that should be compatible with many tastes. There are also configurable furnishings such as this fold-up bed to save space.

11. Rustic Container House
For yet more proof that shipping container homes don’t have to have a modern look, check out this rustic container home measuring 40 feet long and featuring 380 square feet of space.
At a glance, you certainly don’t think “shipping container,” do you? It looks like a tiny house that was built from the ground up with its wood siding, pitched metal roof, and upstairs windows.
The interior also has a look that is homespun, not modern. For those who want a classic look and feel, this house would be the perfect choice.

The house measures 160 square feet. The Lamon Luther Foundation employed homeless craftsmen to help build it.

13. Carolina Beach Vacation House
Visiting Carolina Beach, NC? If so, consider planning a stay in this tiny shipping container accommodation.
You can instantly recognize this as a shipping container from the outside, but it has been painted a pleasant dark blue that contrasts nicely with the sunny yellow cushions on the deck chairs.
The interior of the tiny house is extremely simple, with minimalist décor and a mostly-white look.

14. Downtown NYC Shipping Container Apartment
What do you do if you want to move to Brooklyn, but there is no way you can afford an existing apartment? Build your own, of course. And to save money, you should do it out of shipping containers as contractor David Boyle and his wife, NYIT professor Michele Bertomen decided to do.
The couple combined six shipping containers to create a 1,600-square-foot apartment. Along with plenty of interior space, it also offers a number of outdoor decks. As you can see, it is wedged comfortably between some existing structures.
The corrugated metal texture of the ceilings and walls gives away the fact that this house is made out of shipping containers. But if you were not looking for it, and you did not know this was a shipping container apartment, would you even notice it? Probably not.

15. Backcountry Containers Rustic Retreat XL
The Rustic Retreat XL is a tiny house designed by a company called Backcountry Containers.
True to its name, this home has a rustic look to it with the wood shutters and the deck on top. But it also has a somewhat industrial flavor, because the builders chose not to try and conceal the corrugated metal or hide the fact that this is a shipping container. It is painted a bright, cheerful red.
The interior, on the other hand, does not look industrial at all—it looks fully rustic. You also would not guess from the shiplap walls that this is a shipping container if you had not seen the outside first. 16. $4,000 DIY Shipping Container House
Were you impressed by the $15,000 price tag attached to the DIY shipping container house I shared earlier on this list? I was blown away by it. So I was even more astonished when I found this tiny shipping container home that a single mother built with just $4,000!
The builder, Lulu, had no experience prior to building the house, and used recycled materials she collected in scrap yards to save money. You can find out more about her incredible achievement by watching the video and checking out the original post.
17. Montana 700-Square-Foot Container Home
At 700 square feet, this house is not a “tiny” house, but it is still small enough to make it onto our site. And it is certainly stunning enough that it deserves to be showcased.
This image does a lovely job showing off both the cool modern exterior of the container home and the gorgeous surroundings. That deck looks like an incredible spot to relax and enjoy the mountain views and the fresh air.
The interior of this container house is even cooler than the exterior! The décor style is distinctly modern, and you have to love those old-fashioned bar stools at the counter.

18. Australian Outback Shipping Container Home
Here is another shipping container house located in Australia. It seems that this is a popular way to build a tiny house Down Under.
The house is raised up on stilts on a hillside. It features a large deck with incredible views.

19. Homeless Shelter
Many homeless shelters around the world offer next to no privacy or safety for those who have to stay in them. Tempohousing came up with a solution in the form of this homeless shelter made out of shipping containers.
The 40-foot shipping containers have been stacked to create an apartment complex. Each one allows a resident to have privacy, safety, and dignity.
The shipping container shelters were built in Amsterdam in a factory where, as Tempohousing explains, “unemployed youngsters were hired and received a training-on-the-job, while converting used shipping containers. So 3 advantages in one: recycled containers as a basis, new jobs to manufacture them and used to support homeless people.”

20. Rustic Log Cabin Shipping Container Home
This shipping container house was built by Custom Container Living, a company based in Missouri. As you can see, it looks like a tiny log cabin!
If you did not know this was a shipping container, would you have guessed at a glance? Likely not, unless you realized that it had the familiar shape and size of one. But even then, you probably would have not made it your first guess.

21. Shipping Container Office

It is beautifully modern, featuring huge glass windows and wide awnings along with a spacious porch. This particular office was not only designed to function as a workspace, but also a space to meet clients.

23. The Intellectual
This tiny container home is designed by Rootspace and called “The Intellectual.” It measures 320 square feet, and was put on the market for a price of $54,000.
The charm of this house is that the builder didn’t choose to conceal its nature as a shipping container at all, but added in some homey elements like wood and glass doors.
While the exterior has an industrial look, the interior is more rustic with white walls (and some shiplap), hardwood floors, and minimal furnishings and décor.

24. Texas Shipping Container Home
This tiny house consists of a couple of shipping containers put together in an “L” formation.
The home’s appearance is very modern. No effort has been made to make the house look like it was built out of anything other than shipping containers, but the entire inward-facing walls have been replaced by glass doors/windows. Doing so brings sunlight into the entire home and offers views of the surroundings. It is also conductive to indoor-outdoor living, as are the wide pergolas and generous seating outside.

25. Jungle House
Maybe one of the most distinctive shipping container homes you will ever see is this jungle house featuring vegetation and views.
I’m not sure how many shipping containers went into constructing this house; it looks like it may be more of a “small” than tiny house. With its patios and its flow of indoor-outdoor space, it looks utterly enchanting.
The interior is every bit as stunning as the exterior, and really captures the jungle ambiance of its surroundings. 26. Custom Container Living Tiny House
Here is a shipping container home with an unusual design. The Kansas City company really pushed the concept of the container home in a new direction with this 312-square-foot house.
As best I can tell, the downstairs part of the house is the original shipping container, and the loft was built on top of it. By extending the loft out and adding some posts to support it, the company was able to incorporate a huge shaded patio.
You can see that with the high ceilings (not all of the top structure is loft space, just part of it), there is a really open feeling inside the house. It looks like there is also a lot of natural light.

27. The Boxed Haus
Here is a unique shipping container home known as “The Boxed Haus” that is available in several different models. An 8×20 shipping container serves as the ground floor in every case.
As you can see, this house features a very different configuration from anything else we have looked at here. It has two floors, but the second floor is just a small addition rather than a second full-size container at a staggered angle. There is a garden located on the deck.
To access the second floor, you climb up a ladder in the kitchen through a little hatch.

28. Hummingbird Shipping Container Home
This shipping container home is a product of Hummingbird Homes.
I absolutely love its industrial/rustic exterior. The rust red looks gorgeous, and the word “tex” is an eye-catching design element. Let’s check out the interior.
The interior is rustic with lots of wood and shiplap. It’s a stylish home inside and out.

29. California Mountain Home
I am not 100% sure that this 670-square-foot house located in the mountains near San Diego is made out of shipping containers, but judging by its appearance, I think it may be.
The outside of the house features a rusty patina. In the kitchen/living room, most of the walls consist of doors and windows. With surroundings like these, you would want to take advantage of the scenery, so this was a good design choice.
The house has a gorgeous contemporary interior that makes the most of the setting. The simplicity of the design complements the scenery rather than taking attention away from it.

30. You Can Order This Shipping Container Home from Amazon
Looking for a simple way to bring a shipping container home into your life? It is hard to get easier than ordering it from Amazon.
The house is pretty basic looking, but hey—it’s a house! It features a sewer connection and water and electrical hookups.
Basic appliances come with the house, which is pretty awesome. The last time I checked, it was selling for around $35,000. That is a pretty good price for a beautiful prefab home that already has a lot of what you need ready to go.

31. The LightHotel
Traveling to the region of Saint Paul and Minneapolis? Instead of booking a stay at a regular hotel, you might want to think about staying in the cool LightHotel shipping container accommodation.
This little hotel was designed by Alchemy Architects, and is an on-the-move accommodation. Rather than being situated in just one place, it is routinely transported to a different site. So, depending on when you book, the location may be different than it would if you booked an earlier or later reservation.
Alchemy explains, “This transportable hotel room moves as the flow of the city requires, occupying places both celebrated and ignored. The city itself is its lobby.”
The design and décor in the interior are contemporary, and with the typographic overlays, somewhat humorous.

32. Shipping Container Student Housing Units
This is another project from Tempohousing, called “Keetwonen” and located in Amsterdam. It is a student housing unit consisting of stacked shipping containers.
Originally, the intent of these student housing units was that they serve as temporary dorms, but the students loved them. They were made through a ground-breaking manufacturing process. Tempohousing says, “The finish of these modular homes could meet the high building standards in Europe … and that was really new.”

33. Modern Container House
Here is a tiny house that was designed by Tiny in a Box, a company based in Alabama.
With its wood cladding and clean rectangular form, it has aspects of both contemporary and rustic design. It also features huge windows, an attractive door, and a large porch.
Elegant, minimal, and modern, the interior is a calm, inviting environment. Despite the monochromatic color scheme that the builder selected for the walls, ceiling, shelves and cabinets, the interior doesn’t feel cold or sterile. The bright red chairs and some decorative elements bring color inside and enliven the environment, while the otherwise-white scheme that pervades the room keeps it clean and serene.

34. Dwell Containers Home
Dwell Containers is a company based in Canada. They specialize in creating simple container homes measuring 160 square feet and offering minimalist living quarters.
Wood cladding lends these houses a homey, inviting aspect. Large glass doors facilitate airflow and natural light.
The interiors feature wood clad walls, simple, contemporary kitchens, and flexible interior space that is easy to customize.

35. Triple Shipping Container Home
This tiny house is the work of Canadian DIYer Joseph Dupuis. To create it, Joseph obtained three shipping containers, each for $3,400, connected them, and converted them into a 355 square foot home.
The house sits on a wide deck. Panels can be closed across the front of each of the three units for extra privacy or to protect doors and windows in case of harsh weather. But it is the interior that is really special.
As you can see, this is a shipping container home that is quite different from any other. Joseph came up with the clever idea of connecting all three units along their horizontal walls instead of end-to-end as is more common. He then removed the interior walls, opening up the entire space. The result is a huge living room with a wood-burning fireplace and other amazing features.

36. DIY Weekend Retreat
Keith Lasseigne designed a multi-level shipping container home that ended up getting a feature on “Contain Homes” on HGTV.
The outside features an intriguing blend of materials. The metal side of the container is offset by the smooth wood accenting, which you also see on the chimney. The finishing is stunning, and a nice match for the huge deck. This retreat actually includes multiple containers; you are just seeing one of them in this photo, though you can kind of glimpse another on the right through the trees.
The interior has a warm, inviting, contemporary ambiance, and is flooded with light from outside. As you can see, the house is impressively spacious and wide open!

37. Off-the-Grid Container Retreat
Let’s check out another shipping container DIY retreat, this time built by Larry of Oklahoma.
To make this off-the-grid hunting retreat a reality, Larry combined two shipping containers for a 640-square-foot house. At the original post, you can view the original shipping containers as they were before Larry converted them. You will be astonished by the transformation.
The interior is stunning to say the least! Larry covered the floor, walls and ceiling with wood, giving the hunting cabin a suitably rustic look. As you can see, he found a simple solution for connecting the containers. After he connected them, he just carved out an archway in the middle. Not only was this a simple, practical route, but it also has a decorative effect.
He painted the interior exposed walls of the shipping containers green to match his furnishings and décor. The result is a beautifully coordinated retreat.

38. The Katz Box
The Katz Box tiny container home is marketed as “Modular, Modifiable and Transportable.”
The flagship Katz House is the “Calico Home,” measuring 160 square feet and painted with a distinctive set of contrasting colors. The light blue and black make a bold visual impact, and will definitely help you remember this house in the future.
Here is the interior, which is modern, minimalist, and configurable. The bed folds into the wall in the center of the room (it is in its “up” position right now). This tiny house actually includes a desk for computing, which is awesome, as this feature is frequently absent in tiny builds.

39. Outback Tiny House With an Open Floor Plan
If you are looking for another cool container house with an open floor plan, you will love this one in the Outback.
If you are only glancing at this house, you might not realize it is a container house! The traditional shape of the home with its pitched roof doesn’t exactly shout “shipping containers.” But if you take a closer look, you can see that multiple shipping containers were connected one to the next to make this home (it looks like three of them).
The wide open floor plan proves that with shipping containers, anything is possible. This structure also features a cathedral ceiling to really open up the space. Amazing work! 40. NOLA
This tiny shipping container home was designed by architect Samuel Austin. Rhino Cubed took care of the construction. It measures 24’ and is called NOLA.
What stands out about the house is of course its cool, artsy exterior with bright colors and designs.
The interior features more visual restraint and is simple and classic with wood floors and walls.
